Our Messed Up Juvenile Law System - 1045 Words

Nowadays, the topic of the Juvenile law system is a very controversial as well as difficult discussion to have. For every court case, trial, and scenario, there are many different circumstances that may affect the outcome. Due to the seriousness of their crimes or even their past offenses, juvenile criminals can sometimes be tried as adults. Personally, in the beginning of this assignment, I could see both sides of the argument. There are many reasons why children under the age of 18 should be tried as children, however, there are more proficient reasons as to why we should do away with juvenile court. Many of my peers do not think this, however, they are keen on keeping children tried as children. Deena ends up with permanent paralysis and her boyfriend is killed. The person who smashed into Deena’s car w as another high schooler headed to the prom. The one difference is that the driver of that car was drinking while driving. The driver of this car was 17 years old. Does that really make a difference? Absolutely not. No matter what age, if a crime is committed, a consequence need to be put into action. Let’s flip the story though. Instead of a 17 year old driving drinking, let’s make it a 30 year old. Now, when this case hits the news, everyone will be so sorrowful towards the victims and want to punish the 30 year old, but when the 17 year old faces the consequences, it looks like the system is messed up, right? Wrong. Absolutely, utterly wrong. There is nothing wrong with the system, just the imbeciles that enter it. The public believes that America has given up on its juvenile delinquents. Well sorry to break it to you, but this accusation is false. The only people who have given up are the delinquents. If they do not want rehabilitation, how can we ever expect them to accept it when it is forced upon them? I do not understand the logic of people who want to rehabilitate children, but give no chance to an adult. The truth of the matter is the juvenile delinquents of today like the attention that they get when they are questioned by police.
